MOT bookings

Maldwyn Williams Garage Services is an approved MOT station with qualified and experienced staff. We offer MOT testing for cars and light commercials (Class 4, 5 and 7) for £45 with a free retest if required, and customers can also book online.

It’s a legal requirement that all vehicles over 3 years old to have an MOT. Without an MOT, it’s impossible to renew your road tax and you face a £1000 penalty. Not only that, being without an MOT will almost certainly invalidate your vehicle insurance, risking a 6 – 8 point penalty and the invalidation of any claim.

MOTs were introduced in the 1960s to test vehicles’ safety and roadworthiness, in particular in relation to breaks and emissions. Once a vehicle is 3 years old it must undergo its first MOT, then once a year thereafter. An MOT includes a comprehensive list of both internal and external checks, but it is only a visual check, that is, examiners aren’t permitted to change or remove anything on the vehicle. MOTs don’t replace servicing, and you will still need to ensure your car is regularly serviced.
The MOT test is controlled by the Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency (DVSA) which was previously known as VOSA. All MOT testers must be qualified and approved.

Once the test is complete, you will receive either a pass and a VT20 certificate, or a fail and a VT30 ‘Refusal of an MOT Test’ certificate. All results are recorded in the MOT database.

Under new regulations issued in 2018, defects found on an MOT are classed as ‘dangerous’, or ‘major’ (which result in a fail). You may also get a list of ‘minor’ or ‘advisory’ problems that can be addressed at a later date.
You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving, and receive 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle that has failed its MOT because of a ‘dangerous’ defect.

Pre-MOTs

For many people, having a vehicle off the road after a failed MOT causes huge inconvenience, so having a pre-MOT check is a great way to ensure this doesn’t happen.

Pre-MOTs function as health-checks for your vehicle and can reduce your chances of failing the MOT significantly.
